Greetings Beautiful, Talented, People!!
It is with an extremely
heavy heart, that I convey this news to you. Our friend, mentor, teacher, brother,
leader, Juan (Juanito) Calvo Flores, has made his Transition
from this plane (aiye) to the next (orun). Juanito
passed on, October 24 afternoon, in his home in Lynwood,
California.
We have all been blessed
in many ways by this Brother, we learned drumming, clave and percussion, songs, dance,
rituals, a better way to dress and enjoyed countless other
positive experiences with him. We who are left behind
here now have the responsibility to keep his name, his memory
and his legacy alive, through our efforts to become better
dancers, drummers, singers, percussionists, "fashionistas" and
better people.
I will keep us all updated as to the wake, funeral arrangements,
memorial celebrations, drummings etc that will be held for
Juanito and we are ALL expected to come and participate and
sing/dance/play as a living testimony to all the gifts that
we have received from this Brother, Obatala Priest, Tata
Nkisi, and Man!!
I am really saddened today to have lost the presence of
my friend and brother and I can't imagine singing at a toque/bembe
and not seeing Juanito sitting behind me playing like NO
ONE ELSE CAN/COULD.
Let's hold on to each
other more now and going forward. I
will miss my Brother, my Friend, my Teacher. I know
he has gone Home to be with his Family, and some of Our Families,
let us all pray for Juan and wish him a swift journey to
the Light, and let's pray that our Ancestors receive him
and thank him for all he has done for us here.
Juanito, Rest in Peace, Walk Towards The Light and Sit at
the Feet of God!!
Ibae, Ibae T'Onu!!
RIP: Juan Calvo Flores.

THE PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY
PRESENTS THE
UNIQUE SOUNDS OF TIEMPO LIBRE
OCTOBER 2
Part of the Philharmonic
Society’s 2005-2006 Season
COSTA MESA, CA –
The Philharmonic Society is pleased to present Tiempo Libre,
one of the hottest Miami-based Latin bands today on Sunday,
October 2, 2005 at 7:00 pm held at the Orange County Performing
Arts Center.
Formed in 2001 by pianist
and arranger Jorge Gómez (a graduate from La Escuela
Nacional de Arte in Havana, Cuba), the Miami-based group Tiempo
Libre has been appealing to aficionados of Latin music through
its high-voltage and hard-driven interpretations of distinctive
timba originals. Other members include: Jorge Gomez (music
director, piano), Joaquin “El Kid” Diaz (lead
vocals), Tebelio Fonte (bass), Leandro Gonzalez (congas),
Eduardo Quintana (wind controller), Pavel Diaz (trumpet),
and Angel Arce (drums). These musicians came together to create
a new musical style by fusing their individual talents with
a unique mix of jazz, traditional Cuban and Afro-Cuban music.
Tiempo Libre’s first
major appearance was at the 2002 Ravinia Festival with Celia
Cruz and captivated the crowd of 12,000 that they were invited
back to open for Aretha Franklin the next year. Other successful
U.S. tour stops have included famous NY Latin clubs like Nell's
and La Belle Epoque, and a number of Jazz and Latin music
festivals around the world. The Denver Post praised Tiempo
Libre as the "top timba group in the United States."
Their latest album "Arroz
con Mango" (Shanachie Records) is a powerful display
of superior musicianship, increased group cohesiveness, and
new material that offers unique insight into the experiences
of being Cuban in Miami.
Tickets for Tiempo Libre
are $46, $42, $39, $35, $25, and $70 and are available at
the Philharmonic Society box office at (949) 553-2422, online
at www.PhilharmonicSociety.org and at the Center box office.

Cuba's
Ediciones Vigía has produced
a host of fascinating handmade books of high literary value.
Alfredo Zaldívar, Matanzas poet and cultural coordinator,
founded Vigía in 1985 with the collaboration of graphic
designer Rolando Estévez and
a dedicated, volunteer staff. Scavenging among scarce resources
and recycled materials, they gradually developed a semi-official
publishing house. A few years later, in 1988, they created
their first book, and, in 1990, they published their first
journal, Revista Vigía. Ediciones Vigía's presence
today is stronger than ever, and its books continue to reflect
a determined spirit and respect for beauty. Assembled by Linda
Howe of Wake Forest University, who has worked closely with
Vigía on a number of projects, this exhibition is expected
to tour widely in the United States. The San Francisco Center
for the Book is its first venue.
