The
great celebration of Cuban culture “Festival
Presencia Cubana” returns to its traditional
location by the lake in Echo Park (Park Avenue between Glendale
and Echo Park Blvd), on Sunday, May 22nd, from 11 a.m. to
6 p.m.
The
festival originated from the celebration of the Cuban Independence
from Spain In 1902. This was the last Spaniard colony liberated
in the Americas.
Echo
Park became a settlement for a Cuban community in the sixties
and the area has been recognized by the City of Los Angeles
naming the corner of Park Avenue and Glendale Blvd. as "Jose
Marti Square", the site of a bust of writer-hero Jose
made by the late sculptor Sergio Lopez Mesa.
The
free festival celebrates the cultural heritage of the Cuban
community living throughout the greater Los Angeles area.
Countless vendors, food stands, and various music acts and
performances will also honor Cuban heritage and culture in
this eleventh annual event. Among the many bands that will
be performing are the popular Bim Bam Bum, Yari More, Chalo
y su Aché, Yamila, L.A. Salsa Kids, and the D.J. Saoco.
The
better-know Cuban restaurants of Los Angeles will offer their
specialties and as is traditional at this annual event, there
will be Cuban publications, entertainment for children, arts
and crafts, and an exhibit of painting by Cuban American artists
residing in the Los Angeles area.
The
Cuban Festival “Presencia Cubana” is presented
by the Cuban Culture Foundation and Duval Productions.
